The Uniservitate Global Award 2022 celebrated outstanding Service Learning initiatives that have made a significant impact in their communities.
Diploma in Civic and Development Education (DCDE) – Kenya
The DCDE program bridges the gap between universities and marginalized communities, with a focus on teaching and learning, research, and community service. It also includes research to document local case studies and community outreach to promote social transformation and citizen empowerment. The ultimate goal is to enhance local urban communities’ participation in the democratic process and sustainable development.“Clean Village”: Citizen Campaign for Urban Sanitation – Cameroon
This project is centered on raising awareness about environmental protection and cleanliness in urban areas. It addresses the needs of the densely populated community surrounding the campus in Yaoundé IV, focusing on effective sanitation measures to prevent health risks such as cholera outbreaks and malaria, which are prevalent in unclean environments.
Honorary Mentions:
Franciscan and Tangaza Lenten Ministry – Kenya
This initiative is part of the Franciscan Studies program at Tangaza University College. It involves students ministering to the urban poor, challenging structural injustices, and participating in reflective processes. During Lent, students engage with small Christian communities using themes from the Lenten campaign of the Bishops’ Conference in Kenya, fostering community interaction and social justice since 2015.Development of a Course on Safeguarding Minors and Vulnerable Adults – Kenya
Developed in response to calls by the Catholic Church to address abuses of minors, this course equips participants with skills to protect children from abuse and support those who have experienced such trauma. The course draws on insights from the Diploma Course at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.
Award Prizes:
- First Prizes: Two awards of €5,000 each, with recipients also attending the III Uniservitate Symposium in Rome.
- Honorable Mentions: Two awards of €1,000 each.
These awards highlight the importance of Service Learning in fostering community engagement and social justice.
