Unlocking Prison Boundaries: Service Learning Psychosocial Support for Prison Officers in Kenya
In response to an initial visit by Tangaza alumni and students in 2021, the Service Learning Africa Hub, in collaboration with the Counselling Psychology Department at the Institute of Youth Studies (IYS) at Tangaza University College, launched a comprehensive psychosocial support program for prison officers. This initiative, formalized by an MOU in March 2023, focuses on the mental health and well-being of prison officers and staff at Langata Women’s Prison and Kamiti Medium and Maximum Prisons.
The program equips prison officers with essential counseling skills, stress management techniques, and strategies to navigate their demanding work environment. Qualified counselors, supported by IYS counseling students, provide therapy to both officers and their family members. This engagement embodies the core principle of Service Learning by integrating theoretical knowledge gained by Tangaza students with practical applications to meet the specific needs of prison officers.
Key components of the program include:
- Mental Health Training: Tools and techniques to enhance mental well-being, manage stress, prevent suicide, resolve conflicts, and make informed decisions.
- Personal and Professional Development: Training in self-awareness, self-care, emotional intelligence, family relationships, and understanding the dynamics of work within the prison system.
- Support Services: Playgroups to foster camaraderie, individual counseling sessions for personalized support, and group therapy for collective healing and skill development.
By addressing the diverse needs of prison officers, this program aims to create a more resilient and capable workforce, contributing to the overall improvement of the prison environment and the well-being of both inmates and officers. This initiative showcased Tangaza University College’s commitment to service, learning, and community engagement.
