Tangaza University welcomes the Uniservitate team to Africa
In May, part of the Uniservitate team visited Kenya, Africa, to attend the 2nd Annual Service-Learning Conference, organised by Tangaza University College, the institution leading the Africa hub of the Uniservitate programme for service-learning in Catholic higher education.
Maria Rosa Tapia (Uniservitate Coordinator) and Candelaria Ferrara (Uniservitate Hub Coordinator) participated in a pre-event meeting with representatives from universities in South Africa, Uganda and Tanzania, and the Kenyan hosts. They first talked about the difficulties of graduates getting into the labour market and the positive contribution of service-learning as a pedagogical approach; another discussion revolved around the environment, a topic of particular interest to Alejandra Herrero (Uniservitate/CLAYSS), who was also present. It focused on environmental disasters such as floods, animals destroying crops or the loss of fertile land and how this directly affects the communities.
The team got an invitation to visit SL projects, and they could see and listen to the protagonists explain each experience, its development and its result in the area.
During the two-day conference, all attendees highlighted the hopeful spirit of service-learning in higher education and its positive and transformative effect on communities.
Uniservitate and CLAYSS would like to thank the kindness of the hosts —principals, faculty and students— and the shared work. Find more information on our website.
